Excalibur Estate

Excalibur Estate is the largest surviving post-war prefab housing development in the UK. The 187 humble bungalows, erected from factory-built panels by German and Italian prisoners of war in 1945 and 1946, are located in Catford, South London.

Visiting the Estate evokes a feeling of remoteness; it appears almost surreal within such a close proximity to the center of London. The scattered palms are just adding to its strange charme.

The Estate is deemed for demolition and redevelopment should be long on its way. However, when I visited the settlement in 2014 the bungalows were still standing and the inhabitants seemed not eager to surrender.
